The Student Success Character Development & Mentoring Initiative
Child poverty is on the rise in Canada and now includes 36% of all children in Toronto. For many of these children, this leads to a lack of focus, a loss of hope, and frustration in the classroom. This in turn, can lead to aggressive or disruptive behaviour.
The Toronto Foundation for Student Success has developed and tested an effective
Student Success Character Development & Character Development & Mentoring Initiative which reaches out to these students. Importantly, it involves parents and local role models to ensure that the positive impact of the program extends beyond the classroom and into the home and community.
The program has resulted in increased attendance, improved classroom behaviour and greater rates of homework completion.
In 2008/2009, this Character Development & Mentoring initiative will reach over 15,000 students and help them:
• Build upon their image at school and within their community
• Learn and refine important life skills
• Participate in physical activities that promote teamwork
• Develop healthy eating habits and healthy lifestyles
Support is needed
to help the TFSS expand the Character Development &
Mentoring
Initiative into more schools, helping us reach more “at risk” students.
