George Brown Student With the generous support of Weston and Loblaw Inc. and George Brown College, the Junior Chefs' Club is, by far, the most popular of all programs in Beyond 3:30. Children line up and compete to ensure they can have a place in JCC. Students work closely with the nutrition staff creating healthy, inexpensive dishes. For many of the children this has been an incredible experience. They now know that healthy food can be very tasty, that they can prepare meals that others enjoy and that good food doesn't have to come from a package or tin. The children are now cooking at home and sharing their new skills and knowledge with their families.
The obvious benefit of JCC is that the children are well nourished and are learning about healthy and inexpensive meals. However, the less obvious impacts of the JCC are profound. Our Junior Chefs' learn teamwork and cooperation while cooking, they learn kitchen skills that help them contribute at home and they get an incredible sense of pride and increased self-esteem watching their friends eat and enjoy the meals they have prepared. The community dinners also help to boost their self-esteem as they cook and serve their meals to appreciative parents and siblings. The atmosphere in the kitchens when the children cook is one of fun and excitement.
