Feeding Our Future Student Nutrition Programs can bring neighbourhoods together. In response to elevated rates of poverty, immigration and violent incidents, the Jane Finch school communities worked as one to help all students. When area teachers were asked what they thought was most needed for their students to succeed. "Feed Our Children!" was the overwhelming response. The Jane/Finch Universal Breakfast Program has been the answer since 2008 in providing 6,000 students a healthy morning meal for the 7 area schools. The community mobilized with parents, teachers, students and community volunteers providing almost 1.25 million meals per year. Students told us they "really liked the program" and teachers felt that student's ability to stay on task had improved.

The awareness of student nutrition programs in secondary schools has increased as a result of the Jane/Finch Universal Breakfast program with more schools coming forward. However, the commitment to provide nourishment to children in Toronto is costly. Currently funding only covers just a small fraction of every dollar required.

The Toronto Foundation for Student Success along with its partners continues to make alleviating hunger a priority. Sadly here in Toronto one in three children lives in poverty. In 2009 we helped support over 600 breakfasts, mid morning meals and lunches to over 110,000 children every school day. While the Feeding our Future program is making a tremendous impact. there is still much work to be done.
