The Valley Park Go Green Cricket Field is an initiative to bring a large adult-sized community cricket field to the Thorncliffe and Flemingdon communities. This project has as it's landscape architects Michael Hough and Shompa Hai.
This much needed facility will:
- Offer a friendly environment for children and adults to learn about cricket within a sustainable environment
- Create opportunities for newcomers to connect over their common passion for cricket
- Transform an underutilized schoolyard and public land into a vibrant community space
- Reclaim rainwater for irrigation of our field and provide an outdoor learning environment.
Go Green Sustainable Sports Field is:
- Cricket within walking distance of the neighbourhood
- Multi-use with baseball and soccer using portable nets and baseball cages located just outside the cricket oval
- Beauty of the Don River valley brought back up to the schoolyard
- A track under a tree canopy to create an improved micro climate
- An amphitheatre for outdoor performances
- Cricket and baseball practice cages
- Rainwater diverted from the roof tops and parking lot into a marsh and a reservoir through a bioswale.
Learning opportunities:
- Hands on experience planting a vegetable and herb garden
- Creating an urban forest with students planting trees
- Understanding Storm Water Management within a natural setting
- Reconnecting the schoolyard to the Don valley ecosystem
- Linking the TDSB’s Ecoschools program with the schoolyard.
