boy ready for cricket The Valley Park Go Green Cricket Field is an initiative to bring a large adult-sized community cricket field to the Thorncliffe and Flemingdon communities. This project has as it's landscape architects Michael Hough and Shompa Hai.

This much needed facility will:

  • Offer a friendly environment for children and adults to learn about cricket within a sustainable environment
  • Create opportunities for newcomers to connect over their common passion for cricket
  • Transform an underutilized schoolyard and public land into a vibrant community space
  • Reclaim rainwater for irrigation of our field and provide an outdoor learning environment.

Go Green Sustainable Sports Field is:

  • Cricket within walking distance of the neighbourhood
  • Multi-use with baseball and soccer using portable nets and baseball cages located just outside the cricket oval
  • Beauty of the Don River valley brought back up to the schoolyard
  • A track under a tree canopy to create an improved micro climate
  • An amphitheatre for outdoor performances
  • Cricket and baseball practice cages
  • Rainwater diverted from the roof tops and parking lot into a marsh and a reservoir through a bioswale.

Learning opportunities:

  • Hands on experience planting a vegetable and herb garden
  • Creating an urban forest with students planting trees
  • Understanding Storm Water Management within a natural setting
  • Reconnecting the schoolyard to the Don valley ecosystem
  • Linking the TDSB’s Ecoschools program with the schoolyard.
